Dale Vern Maupin, 94, of Shell Rock, formerly of Waverly passed away at the Shell Rock Health Care Center on Jan. 5, 2014.
Services were held on Monday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at The Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly with military honors conducted by Waverly Area Veterans’ Honor Detail. Private family interment will be held at a later date at The Greenwood Cemetery at Nashua.
Survivors include his wife: Lorraine (Larri) Maupin, Shell Rock. Children: Donald (Jo) Maupin, Waukesha, Wisconsin; Richard (Janet) Maupin, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Dennis Maupin, Eugene, Oregon. Grandchildren: Scott (Bethany) Maupin, Nicole and Emily Carroll-Maupin, and James Maupin. Brother: Kenneth (Phyllis) Maupin, New Hampton. Sisters-in-law: Joan Kratchmer, Waverly, Harriet (Ken) Blockhus, Elgin, Margaret Maupin, Rockford, Marge Maupin, Harlan, and Dorothy Juhl-Zelle, Cedar falls.
Dale was preceded in death by his father, Davis, mother, Gladys, brothers: Dave and Glennys, sisters: Ada Beth and Maxine.
Dale was born on Dec. 28, 1919, the son of Davis and Gladys (Huffman) Maupin. Dale attended rural schools near Plymouth and Nora Springs High School, graduating in 1937. Dale joined the US Army Air Force in 1940, serving in The South Pacific during WW ll as a mechanic on New Caledonia and Guadalcanal. Later he became a B-24 pilot. He served in Italy from 1944-45. He married Lorraine Juhl on January 16, 1944. After the war, Dale graduated from Iowa State College. He worked in Iowa and Minnesota for Farmers National Company of Omaha. He was a life-long member of the Methodist Church. Dale and Larri lived in Emmetsburg, Nashua, Mason City, Mission, Texas and Waverly.
Dale was an active baseball player in his youth and an avid golfer most of his life. His hobbies were: reading, writing, wood carving, stitchery, gardening, and serving as a Boy Scout Leader. He usually won whatever game was played with friends.
