Lavon Ruth Juhl

Lavon JuhlLavon Ruth Juhl, 89, of Waverly, died Monday, December 8, 2014, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

Lavon was born October 12, 1925, in Bremer, Iowa, the daughter of Lyle and Dorothy (Koenig) Ormston. She graduated from Waverly High School and attended Westmar College in La Mars, Iowa. On June 9, 1946, she was united in marriage to Ralph Juhl at the Evangelical Church in Waverly. She taught school for five years and worked as a clerk and bookkeeper. 

Lavon was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly where she taught Sunday School, Bible School, and sang in the choir.  She served as AMVETS Auxiliary president for the local club on four different occasions. She served as district president and state president, and represented Iowa on the National AMVETS Executive Committee. A 50 -year member of the Waverly Hospital Auxiliary, she served as president in 1977-78, was voted member of the year in 1984, and was a member of the clubs Pink Pacesetters singing group. She made monthly trips for over 37 years to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown to volunteer. In 2014, she was awarded the Governors Volunteer Award for her commitment to helping others. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, traveling, big band music, dancing and spending time with her family and friends. 

Lavon is survived by six children, Peggy (Randy) Rogers of Soldotna, Alaska, Jim (Claudia) Juhl of Montrose, Colorado, Tom (Cindy) Juhl of Norwalk, Iowa, Sue Juhl of Bigfork, Montana, Bob (Lindee) Juhl of Janesville, and Jan (Steve) Bartlett of Waverly; 11 grandchildren, Katie(Billy) Dawley, Chad (Allissa) Bartlett, Jessica (Paul) Dane, Jenny Rogers, Shannon (Jayaka) Oguri, Jamie Bartlett Zedeker, Jarred (Karla) Juhl, Grant Juhl, Tiffany Juhl, Doug Juhl, and Valerie Juhl; and 11 great grandchildren, two brothers; Dick (Babs) Ormston of Waverly and Bill (Cynthia) Ormston of Marshalltown, two sisters; Marie Larson of Stockton, California and Mary (Dave) Beidelman of Panora, sisters-in-law; Marj Reinhardt of Waverly and Norma Juhl of Storm Lake, brother-in-law; Arnie (Ruth) Juhl of Cedar Rapids. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Ralph; brother Bob Ormston; sister Grace Westendorf. –
