My thought was that a new Commander would be writing this however you are stuck with me.
AMVETS Post 79 had our first meeting on June 10th which is held every second Wednesday of every month for all members. Decisions are made that affect the membership, veterans and the community. We are always open to new ideas and/or suggestions from all members, not just the 6-10 officers that attend.
Before the Pledge of Allegiance I try and come up with some true story that I’ve heard during the month.
AMVETS Post 79 is pleased to announce two scholarship winners of $500 each. The awardees are Jazlyn Westmoreland, granddaughter of life members John and Judy Behne, and Faith Abben, granddaughter of life member Larry Schmidt and daughter of life member Ed Abben. These young ladies have had outstanding high school careers at Waverly-Shell Rock. Jazlyn will further her education at Chicago State University with a major in accounting and will continue her volleyball career. Faith will continue her education at Iowa State University with an emphasis on elementary education. Congratulations and Best Wishes to both of you!
Post 79 decided to contribute its interest check of $1400 (received from WAVP for the loan) back to WAVP to help cover the ongoing expenses during the COVID-19 epidemic.
Because of the wildly fluctuating meat prices, it has been difficult to determine a reasonable price for steak nights. Hopefully, the prices will settle down over the next few weeks do that a consistent selling price can be determined. Stay tuned!
WAVP Notes
The annual meeting will be held on July 21 at 6 pm at the WAVP.
WAVP has been a recipient of a very gracious local benefactor. We have received a portion of the Wayne Anderson estate, amounting to $166,000 for which we are truly thankful! Because of the above gift, WAVP has lowered its current debt to $230,000 (from a total project cost of $4.5 million). We are very grateful to everyone who has contributed, and also to all who continue to support WAVP’s programs and activities. Together, we are helping veterans and their families, as well as the entire community!
Lastly but very important we must get on the RECRUITING WAGON!!!!

Thanks to Carl Benning for his part in this and I encourage anyone to tell me if you want something printed.
