Commander’s Call – 1 May 2014

*As we break out of this past winter’s grasp and approach summer, May has some very significant dates that we need to reflect upon. Mother’s Day and Memorial Day, I am sure come to everyone’s mind, but here are a just a few more; May 2, 1945-fighting ends in Italy and 1 million German troops surrender – May 8, 1945-V.E. Day-Germany surrenders – May 14, 1942-US Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps is formed – May 17th-Armed Forces Day.

*The American Legion is in charge of Memorial Day and Veterans Day activities this year and I ask for your support and assistance, knowing that AMVETS will be there. If you display the US flag, please ensure that it is in good condition and replace if necessary. You may contact me, or purchase from the VFW or Legion, this ensures that it supports a Veteran organization and is USA made.

*I would like to express my condolences to the families and friends of Laura Buhr and Sharon Shellenberger, who passed away since the last newsletter. It was such a pleasure to know these ladies and have them share a small portion of their lives with me.

*AMVETS Post 79 will hold election of officers on May 14th at the end of our normal meeting. I would ask that more AMVETS show up and support these officers. Several of these officers spend countless hours, volunteering their time and talents for no financial gain, and do not expect anything, but a “Thank you” at this meeting would mean a lot to them.

*The Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging is asking for help in delivering meals (meals on wheels) to homebound residents. It works best if you could work as a couple, and make yourself available to assist them. You determine when you would be available, so there is no “locked in” commitment. If interested, please contact Sally West – ph. 319-352-2463. It takes approximately one hour of your time and vehicle to do this, but the reward you get from those you serve in smiles and thanks is well worth it. You may also contact me or Jean Lanske if you have questions.

*Starting May 1st, a new web site for Waverly AMVETS Post 79 will be activated. Please copy   http://www.amvets79.us/ either to your browser, favorites or where you remember. This will replace the current AMVETS site, which you reach through www.waverlyvets.us . The old site will stay active for a period of time, but the newsletter and other AMVETS updates will be on the new site.   Links will be made to redirect you to the new site. This is being done with the blessing of Oren Phipps, (our current webmaster) who has done a tremendous job for us and will still be involved, but the new site will take some of the load off of him. As technology changes, so does the ability to upload/download information and more important “the user friendly” applications. This new site was developed by Jeff Walker, CEO of NuggetWeb.com with input from several people and his staff. This is and will be a work in progress and we invite your input, but first go to http://www.amvets79.us/ , click on TUTORIAL and then visit everything on the site. Please email me tedsph98@aol.com with any comments, placing website in the subject. There will be some growing pains, but when functioning, this site will allow us to place new information on it immediately, therefore making a site that people will visit more than once a month. If you (AMVET Family) or someone you know would like to participate in this project, please contact me. More information will be provided in future newsletters.

Vietnam War Monument - Iowa*Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day will be held on May 7th, 2014 at the Vietnam War Monument – Iowa State Capitol Grounds – at 11:00 a.m.   This is commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War.

*PLEASE NOTE: Effective May 1st, steak and salad prices will increase. The exception will be the fillets, which will remain the same. When placing your order, please ask the staff to give you the new prices, so if you are one of those that write a check before hand, there will not be a surprise. Anyone who has shopped for food lately, knows these costs have increased, but there is still no better deal around than Saturday night steaks.

*Also note, that in http://www.amvets79.us/ , under the heading HOME there is a subheading LATEST NEWS. This is an area, we plan on placing updates, information received after the normal newsletter is published, or provide more information on a subject. We are limited in print space with our normal newsletter because of mailing costs and a print size to keep it readable. Therefore I would urge all of you to take the time to investigate the new site.

*As I finish my ninth year (not continuous) serving as your Commander; there are so many people to thank for supporting me over the years. To all of you that maintain your membership as part of our AMVETS Family, know I appreciate that and to the Lady that stands by me, supports me, and listens to my ________ when things are not going the way I would like, a huge THANK YOU.
