Waverly AMVETS Post 79 and Sons of AMVETS will have their annual membership dinner on Wednesday, October 14, 2015, at the temporary home of the Waverly Area Veterans Post at 208 8th Ave. SW. Social hour begins at 5:00 pm and dinner follows at 6:00 pm. All former “social” members are encouraged to come to the dinner to learn about the new terminology.
It has been suggested that everyone bring some military memorabilia to display at the membership dinner. I know all have at least something to share (or trying to forget). A brief note of description can accompany the article(s), if necessary.
The Waverly Area Veterans Tribute corner is looking great! Although it wasn’t necessary very often, the irrigation system (thanks to the Ralph Juhl family and a grant) kept the grass green all summer. Also, thanks to the City and Golf crews for their assistance. The 2015 bricks were installed late spring, bringing the total number to over 1550 individual bricks. The 2016 orders must be sent in by mid-March, 2016; applications are available online at www.waverlyvets.us or by contacting Carl Benning or Ted Lanske. This is an excellent opportunity to recognize any veteran with local ties.
We are in need of someone to engrave several name plaques for the Harlington Cemetery Avenue of Flags. If you have a router and willing to help, please let us know (Carl Benning, Rich Miller); the redwood plaques are available.
Work on the new Vets Center continues; the lower level walls are completely poured. The under-floor drainage and electrical should be installed shortly, followed by pouring the floor. Steel for the upper level will be delivered soon. A brief word for all “inspectors”: please respect the off-limits fencing as well as any contractors on site!
Thanks to all those assisting with the local homeless veterans shelter (unique to Bremer County). Also, thanks to those helping with the Thursday food nights, the Saturday morning breakfast (the second Saturday of every month), and other activities. Suggestion: please volunteer for any opportunities! Reminder: there will be an AMVETS sponsored steak fry on Saturday, October 3.
With school activities in full swing, harvest activities beginning, and many local detours continuing, please drive safely!
